State Senator Kelvin Butler attends opening ceremony

An event six years in the making came to fruition on Saturday, March 19, 2022, in Centreville with the opening ceremony for the Marvin Earl Haynes Community League co-ed Flag Football League season.
Marvin Earl Haynes a Wilkinson County Student, Teacher, Coach and Principal received his BS and master’s degrees from Alcorn State University.
Teaching children was Marvin Earl Haynes’ life calling.  In his daily interactions with students, he encouraged and challenged them to perform to their highest potential.
He was generous with his time as well as his finances often purchasing needed classroom and sports equipment for his students.
On a hot summer evening in August 1983, after doing what he loved to do; helping youth by providing positive guidance and a safe place to play basketball in the William Winans Gymnasium, Marvin Earl Haynes passed away.
Donald “DJ” Jackson, Director of Football Operations for the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network said, “Marvin Earl Haynes will always be remembered for the interest he displayed for the well-being of our youth in the classroom setting, while participating in athletic activities and in our community.
Donald “DJ” Jackson went on to say, “Marvin Earl Haynes’ life example of caring for our youth is often used as a model when we develop our programs, most recently during the development of our co-ed flag football program.”

Marvin Earl Haynes Community League program activities are inclusive of all youth with the specific goal of reducing youth violence. Our programs are open to all, and does not restrict participation due to race, religion, gender or ability.
Marvin Earl Haynes Community League parents and coaches believe that if our children can play and work together when they are young, they will be less likely to kill each other as they grow older.
Marvin Earl Haynes Community League program provides meaningful opportunities for females to participate and learn in a gender-safe environment where equality is taught and respected.  We removed barriers for girls and women who want to participate in football by developing opportunities for all athletes to achieve their highest potential.
Parents and teachers are included in the programs and connections are made from the program to school and home life. Participants in our programs must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and have no disciplinary or conduct issues in school, on the bus, at home or within our community.
Local leaders and members of our community are consulted and included in the organization. We are a “Grassroots” organization that work closely with the Wilkinson County School District and Town of Centreville, with the understanding that we must all work together to share resources, educate our citizens, and partner with business and government leaders to find solutions to problems in our community.
Marvin Earl Haynes Community League coaching staff is Heads Up certified through USA Football, a comprehensive program developed to advance player safety in the game of football. Our coaches place emphasis on gaining skills, sportsmanship, teamwork, accountability, self- discipline and positive social interaction.
David Walker, President of the Wilk-Amite Youth Action Network added, “Participating in organized sporting activities is expensive and not all of the families in our area can afford the cost. As a result, we strive to keep the costs low. While we understand times are tough economically for almost everyone, we truly feel that the intangible benefits our youth receive through participating in our programs cannot be tracked with a price tag.  Therefore, our organization has adopted funding and spending strategies to sustain operations for an extended period of time. These strategies include vigorous fund-raising activities, grant writing, donors and a solid financial approach to managing these resources.”
